Gibraltar 23 - 28 October 2024 staying at the Eliott Hotel

Wednesday 23 October

Boarded the 7.05am flight and sat on the runway until 8.12am due to fog at Heathrow. Arrived in Heathrow and transferred from T5 to T3 and managed to make the connecting flight to Gibraltar. We quickly cleared passport control and by a miracle our suitcase came through in a matter of minutes and we then caught a taxi to our hotel. Checked in and we were allocated room 601 which is very nice.

Unpacked and went for a walk along Main Street to Casement Square where we had a snack in Burger King as we weren't very hungry. Walked to Ocean Village and looked at all the restaurants and pubs in Ocean Village

and ended up in the Casino Admiral. Played for a little while and then walked back to our hotel.

Thursday 24 October

Had a delicious breakfast which is included in our hotel booking. There was cereals, yogurt, fruit, cheese, cold meat, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, beans, mushrooms, sausages, bacon, toast, croissants and doughnuts.

These chocolate doughnuts were amazing - they had chocolate running right through them!

Had a rest after that before walking in the opposite direction on Main Street to see where that took us. Walked through the Commonwealth Park

and stopped to have a coffee in McDonalds before walking along a different marina looking at all the yachts and restaurants there.

Returned to our hotel and rested. The humidity is 90% today so my hair looks like Monica's hair in Friends when they went to Barbados! Went out and shared a pizza in Domino's Pizza which was on offer for £6.99 and it was huge. We could barely finish it! Had our usual visit to the casino before calling it a day.

Friday 25 October

After another lovely breakfast we set off and walked to the Botanic Gardens.

Wandered round and discovered they had a zoo there so we paid £5 each to go in. There were marmosets, tortoises, Maquace monkeys, bats, lemurs, snakes, parrots and Guinea pigs.

Had a rest in our room and then went for a snack at Burger King again in Casement Square before our nightly trip to the casino.

Saturday 26 October

After breakfast we walked along Main Street to Casement Square where we witnessed the Ceremony of the Keys which was something you don't see every day.

Then we walked all the way to Catalan Bay (a 45 minute walk) where we sat in the sun for a while and had a walk along to see all the colourful houses.

Caught the bus back to town and returned to our hotel for a rest. Visited the casino at night to have our free buffet which they put on every Saturday night.

Luckily we missed the worst of the rain whilst we were in the casino and got back to our hotel without getting too wet. I have been badly bitten on my arms by I don't know what or when and have about 7 really nasty bites which are very itchy and sore. Might have been when we were at the zoo the other day when there was a lot of insects flying round about us.

Sunday 27 October

Didn't get much sleep because of the bites on my arms and having to get up and put hydrocortisone on them. Had breakfast then went out for a walk to some of the marinas that we haven't seen yet.

It's a lovely sunny day today. I just wish I felt a bit better so I could enjoy it without being in pain all the time from the bites. My arms are burning. Returned to our hotel and rested. Just had sandwiches from Morrisons for our evening meal in our room with a cup of coffee made with the in-room kettle. Had our usual visit to the casino at night.

Monday 28 October

Another awful night's sleep as 3 or 4 of the bites on my arms now have huge blisters on them. Had our last breakfast before checking out and catching a taxi to the airport. Our flight was on time and once we landed in Heathrow we caught the bus from terminal 3 to terminal 5 and we were the only ones on the bus! Once through passport control in terminal 5 the queue for security was horrendous so it was just as well we had decided to have 4 hours in Heathrow when we booked our flights. Spent time in the BA lounge before catching our flight up to Edinburgh.
