Las Vegas 30 August - 13 September 2011 at the Stratosphere

Las Vegas 30 August 2011 – 13 September 2011

Tues 30 August

Caught the 11.45am British Airways flight down to London and landed at terminal 5. Walked round all the shops and duty free and then shared a meal deal from Boots to keep us going. Boarded our jumbo jet and took off for Las Vegas at 5.05pm. Watched 3 films and had 2 meals before landing 10 hours later. Cleared customs and walked from terminal 2 to terminal 1 to catch the 108 bus to the Stratosphere. Checked in and we were allocated a room in the North Tower. We asked about maybe changing to the Central Tower as that’s where we stayed in April so the girl reserved a room for us in the Central Tower which we will change to in the morning. Had a little gamble on the slots before we went to bed at about midnight (8am UK time)

Wed 31 August

Woke up at 5.45am and had showers then breakfast in McD’s – their oatmeal is still as good as ever. Jim nipped down to Bonneville Transit Center to buy our 30 day bus tickets then we took the 108 to Bonneville and then the 107 to Downtown. Had a look round the newly refurbished Plaza and it’s looking really nice. Made use of the free wi-fi in the lobby.

Caught the 107 down Boulder Highway to Sam’s Town and nipped into Walmart for a few things before meeting up with our friend, Ann in Bogart’s Leather shop in Sam’s Town. From there we took the 107 up to Arizona Charlie’s for a 2 for 1 lunch buffet (ACG coupon). Had a quick gamble on the slots before catching the 107 up to Downtown to top up the phonecard in Walgreens.

These plaques are set into the sidewalk near El Cortez and I've always meant to take a photo of them

I love this one 😄

Walked up to Binions and phoned home before catching the SDX back to the Stratosphere. We changed rooms and we’re now in the Central Tower in room 21-090 right outside the elevators with a view of the Tower and the Strip. Had a sleep and then walked over to White Cross Drugs to buy vodka, beer, water, cranberry juice and tonic water. We then relaxed in our room until it was time to go down to gamble. We hit good bonuses on Kitty Glitter, Bombay and a new slot called Dragon’s Realm. Those bonuses kept us going for the whole night and we walked away $10 up – a minor miracle.

Thurs 1 September

Woke up early again and went to Burger King for breakfast – their oatmeal isn’t as good as McD’s) then relaxed beside the pool for a while. Had a short nap in our room as the jetlag is catching up with us, before setting off on the SDX to Downtown as it is the official opening of the Plaza today. Unfortunately there is now no free wi-fi in the lobby area so we’ll have to make a trip to the Cosmopolitan to check our emails now. Exchanged a ACG coupon for $5 free play and won $3.50. Next we boarded the Deuce to go for our prepaid meal at Planet Hollywood. Disaster struck when we arrived only to be greeted with a sign saying “Private Party”. The chap at the door apologised and signed our voucher to say that we could come back another day. We then decided to use our 2 for 1 buffet ACG coupon at Terribles so walked to Ballys to catch the 202 bus. When we were on the bus I remembered that it was seafood night and therefore we couldn’t use our coupon. We rang the stop bell and managed to get off at Koval and went instead to Ellis Island to use our LVMR coupon for a buy 1 entree get 1 free. By this time we were absolutely starving so we were delighted to learn that all entrees are served with soup or salad so we both chose soup and luckily it arrived quickly and was delicious (chilli with beef). The main course of Fried Chicken Steak with mashed potatoes and veg was huge and could have fed a whole family. We couldn’t quite finish it and the waitress asked if we’d like boxes to take home the remains. We declined as I don’t think we’ll be eating again till breakfast. Next Jim played through $10 so that he could get $10 free play tomorrow (LVMR coupon) and I joined the players club so that I could get $10 free play tomorrow as well. We won $25.81 from the $10 we played through so a profit of $15.81. Then we remembered we had an ACG coupon for 4 free drinks so we used that and walked around watching other people spend their money. We then walked up to Ballys and I bought a couple of gifts in one of their stores (2 for $20). We then crossed over to see the Bellagio Conservatory.

Took some photos and then walked next door to the Cosmopolitan to use their free wi-fi to clear our emails.

We then crossed over the Strip and walked up to Paris to catch the SDX back to the Strat. Spent the evening in the casino with no wins at all.

Fri 2 September

Had breakfast in McD’s at Sahara and checked our emails with their free wi-fi. Walked to the Hilton and checked out the changes to their hotel. Their Space Quest casino is now a cabaret area with a dance floor and a small amount of slots. Next we watched a slot tournament just next to the Race & Sports Book. We then walked up to the Riviera to check out their new Sports Book and the Bingo Parlour.

Caught the Deuce back to the Strat and called in at our local store for water and cranberry juice. Had showers and got ready to go for our prepaid meal at Planet Hollywood.

Jim had the Chilli Cheeseburger and I had the Philly Cheesesteak. We asked our waiter if it was a celebrity who had had a private party the day before and he told us that it was a party for paramedics. We then visited a few shops in the Forum Shops including an art gallery next to Planet Hollywood

Lushpin painting

before crossing over to Harrah’s and the Imperial Palace. We watched the lookalike dealertainers and saw Christina Aguilera and the Blues Brothers singing. We then walked along past O’Sheas, Flamingo and Bill’s and walked down to Ellis Island to play our $10 free play each. We also used a LVMR coupon for 3 free drinks each (2 lagers and 4 vodkas). I won $9.92 from my $10 of free play and Jim won $2.43 from his. We then walked back up to the Strip and caught the Deuce back to the Strat.

Oops!

Spent the evening in the casino and didn’t win anything again.

Sat 3 September

Had breakfast in McD’s at Sahara and checked our emails. Walked back to the Strat and as the maid was still cleaning the room we decided to go to the fitness center.

Jim did 20 minutes on the bicycle and I only did 10 as it was my first time. We then had a look round the gift shop and went back to our room. Jim read the newspaper and I read my book and before you knew it we’d fallen asleep. We woke up at 3.20pm and left for our 2 for 1 buffet at Terribles. Caught the 108 bus back to the Strat and rested until it was time to go Downtown to see Howard Jones on stage at Fremont Street. It was really busy so we didn’t stay long. Gambled for a little while in the Strat when we got back – still no wins.

Sun 4 September

Had breakfast in McD’s at Sahara and checked or emails. Spent some time at the pool and the fitness center, then had showers and caught the SDX to Bonneville and changed to the 402 which took us to Sunset Station. Walked to the 99c store and Walmart to do some shopping then returned to Sunset Station to partake of their buffet with a 2 for 1 LVMR coupon ($10.60 total) We then caught the 402 bus back to Bonneville and changed to the Deuce to go back to the Strat.

Had a rest in our room and fell asleep again. All this hot weather is making us really drowsy. Went down to the casino at 9pm and managed to lose only $7 – another minor miracle.

Mon 5 September

Had breakfast at McD’s at Sahara and checked our emails. As it is cloudy and raining today we decided to go to the LV Outlets at the South Strip so caught the SDX next to the Sahara Monorail Station. Wandered around the shops then caught the bus to Planet Hollywood Hotel and had a wander round the Miracle Mile shops.

We then caught the Deuce back to the Strat and went to Burger King for a 2 for 1 Whopper plus dessert. As we are worried about where we check in to terminal 2 when we return home we decided to have a trip to the airport on the 108 bus to check it out so we would know where to go next week. Mission accomplished we caught the 108 back to the Strat and spent the evening in the casino with no wins again.

Tues 6 September

Had breakfast as usual in McD’s at Sahara and checked our emails. We then phoned our son from the Strat to hear how his holiday in Malta went. We sat at the Sports Book for a while to see if the Scotland game was on and Jim discovered that his bottle of water had leaked in the bag the camcorder was in and everything was soaking including his hat and newspapers. We tried to dry everything out as best we could with napkins and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that all the film we’ve taken so far won’t be ruined. Caught the SDX down to the Bellagio and enquired about tickets for Chriss Angel only to be told that he is off until 13 September – the day we leave. Crossed over the walkway to Caesar’s Palace and caught the 202 to the Rio

Lobsters waiting to be chosen

and booked tickets for Penn & Teller for that night (2 for 1 LVMR coupon) .We discovered that you could pay lunch prices at the World Carnival Buffet right up to 3.30pm so we decided to have the lunch buffet with a 2 for 1 LVMR coupon ($19.45 incl tax). What a huge buffet – 200 steps from one end to the other! It also had a restroom inside which we thought was unusual. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal.

After we’d had our fill we caught the 202 and the SDX back to the Strat to shower and get changed for the show. Caught the SDX and the 202 back to the Rio and arrived about 8.20pm for the show start at 9pm. Before the show starts there is a jazz combo playing at the side of the stage and everyone is invited to go on stage and sign an envelope and examine a box which Penn & Teller use in their act. We enjoyed the show but we’d seen about 3 or 4 of their tricks before when they were on UK television with Jonathon Ross. Took photos of them when we came out as they pose with members of the audience in the foyer.

Caught the 202 and the SDX back to the Strat where we spent an hour or so in the casino – more losses.

Wed 7 September

Had breakfast in McD’s at Sahara and checked our emails then caught the SDX to Town Square.

View from Town Square looking north to the Strip

Wandered round all the shops then caught the SDX to the Showcase Mall and crossed over to the Monte Carlo

Penguins outside the Monte Carlo advertising the Ice Bar

and took the tram to Crystals/Aria trying to find the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. When we did find it all it turned out to be was a lobby and check in desk. We then went back and caught the SDX back to Downtown where we had a 2 for 1 buffet in Main Street Station (free coupon from internet).

Bought more lager, water and cranberry juice in White Cross Drugs on the way back to the Strat and then met up with our friends from Wales at the front door at 6pm. We went up the top of the Tower with them for an hour or so and then sat in our room and had drinks and chatted. We walked them over to the SDX bus stop at about 9pm and then spent the evening in the casino – more losses.

Thurs 8 September

Had breakfast in McD’s at the Stratosphere and then showered and caught the SDX to the Fashion Show Mall and walked through the Palazzo

and the Venetian then Casino Royale. Got to Harrahs just in time to use our LVMR coupon to see the Mac King show at 1pm. That is the 5th time we have seen his show and it was as good as ever. We then walked down to the Cosmopolitan to use their free wi-fi before heading over to the Hard Rock Cafe for our prepaid meal.

Sourvenir shop with it's own helicopter!

We then walked down to the MGM Grand and saw 2 baby lions at the lion habitat.

We then crossed over to NYNY and had a wander round there too. We then walked up to Paris and caught the Deuce back to the Strat. This afternoon on the Strip there were hardly any porn-slappers about. We thought it might be their day off but early evening they were out in force as usual. I forgot to mention the other day we actually saw some of them sweeping up discarded cards – we nearly fainted with surprise! Caught the SDX to Downtown and played my $5 free play in the Plaza and $5 free play in the Vegas Club (both ACG coupons) and won the grand total of $1.96 – so much for Vegas Club advertising that their slots were 40% looser!

9/11 Memorial at Fremont St (they are standing behind a chunk of iron that was part of the twin towers)

This is the same memorial a few days later

We then went unto the Golden Gate to see Gloria and Ivy (2 friendly cocktail waitresses). We chatted for a while and then gambled for a while and then went back to the Strat to lose more.

Fri 9 September

Had breakfast in McD’s at Sahara and checked our emails. Went back to the Strat and as there was no queue at registration we decided to ask for a late check out for Tuesday. We chatted to the girl for quite a while as she waited for a manager to become available then she spoke to someone and they agreed to a 5pm check out at no extra charge – wonderful. (Think we might have got it as we stayed in the Strat for 16 nights in April and we are booked to stay for 17 nights next April). We then caught the 204 and the 119 up to Aliante Station

and got there in time to get into the Feast Buffet for the lunch price on a 2 for 1 LVMR coupon ($8.64).

Had a wander round the hotel

Photo of a photo of the Aliante pool

before walking along to a park area that we’d passed on the bus on the way there

and then caught the 119 at about 6pm to the Palace Station. Went in there to get a drink as we were both very thirsty. Caught the 204 back to the Strat and had a rest before going down to the casino. We’d only been playing for about half an hour when friends from Scotland miraculously spotted us and we went up the Tower with them. It was their first time in Vegas and they were really excited and were amazed at the view and the rides at the top of the Tower. We walked them to the bus stop when they were leaving as they had walked all the way from Planet Hollywood to the Strat and didn’t fancy walking all the way back.

Sat 10 September

Had breakfast in McD’s at Sahara and checked our emails. Had showers then went Downtown and caught the 106 to Santa Fe Station. It is really cloudy today and much cooler and the rain came on for a while accompanied by thunder and lightning. We had a look round the casino and then went for the lunch buffet at about 3.15pm with a 2 for 1 LVMR coupon ($8.64). We then watched a bit of the US Open tennis (Andy Murray getting beaten by Nadal) before catching the 106 back to Bonneville and then the SDX back to the Strat. Sat at the pool for a while as it has now brightened up

and then rested in our room until 9.45pm. Spent the evening in the casino and only played 10c a go instead of 20, 25 or 30 and our money lasted a lot longer – in fact we were $10 up at the end of the night thanks to a big bonus on a Stinkin’ Rich slot.

Sun 11 September

Had breakfast in McD’s at Sahara and checked our emails and last night’s lotto numbers – no luck there as usual. Sat at the pool for an hour and then did 10 minutes in the fitness center. Went back to our room and watched the biggest thunderstorm we’d ever seen in Vegas with torrential rain which lasted about 20 minutes. When we left to go to the Orleans for our buffet all the roads and pavements were flooded so we couldn’t get across the road to catch the SDX.

We rode the Deuce instead down to the Monte Carlo and then walked down to Tropicana to catch the 201 to the Orleans. We had their 2 for 1 dinner buffet (LVMR coupon $15.12). We then used a $10 matchplay for the slots from the LVMR coupon book and made a profit of $5.30. Caught the 7.10pm 104 bus up to Sahara and then the 204 back to the Strat. Relaxed in our room for a little while and then left to go Downtown. Met a couple from Canada in the elevator and spoke to them for quite a while telling them all about the buses and tix4tonite etc.

Went to the California and won $35 thanks for a Frog Princess slot playing 10c a go. Our strategy over the last 2 nights has definitely paid off. Came back to the Strat and chatted with Carol at registration and then played in the casino and ended the day $50 up thanks to a good bonus on Kingdom of the Titans playing 10c and a win on a single spin on a Dean Martin slot of $6.20 playing only 5c a go!

Mon 12 September

Had breakfast in McD’s at Sahara and checked out emails. Sat at the pool for an hour then had showers and caught the 108 then the 107 down to Sam’s Town. Phoned home and then used a 2 for 1 buffet coupon from the local paper ($10.80). We then had a 2 for 1 game of ten pin bowling using a coupon from the local paper – I beat Jim 150 to 125 and then watched the Mystic Falls Water show. Caught the 107 to Downtown and said goodbye to Tita, the cocktail waitress in the California and Gloria & Ivy in the Golden Gate. Gambled a little in each casino and won $1.75 in each. Returned to the Strat and spent our last evening in the casino – no wins. Remembered that we hadn’t checked in for our flight so we went up to the free wi-fi hotspot just outside the Bite theatre and checked in. Went to bed about 2.30am and we were just falling asleep when the loudest and longest thunder and lightning storm hit. It lasted for ages and Jim got up and filmed some of it.

Tues 13 September

Had our last breakfast in McD’s at Sahara and checked our emails. We then went down to the Bellagio to see if the conservatory had been changed but they were in the midst of work getting it ready for autumn.

Caught the SDX to Downtown and played the 1pm session of bingo in the Plaza – no luck. Caught the SDX back to the Strat and had lunch at Burger King (2 for 1 Whopper) and then showers and packed our suitcases. Checked out at 5pm and caught the 5.20pm 108 bus to the airport. Checked in for our flight and spent a couple of hours at the gate before boarding. Our flight was nearly on time and we both managed to get about 3 – 4 hours sleep after our meal. The rest of the 9 hour flight went quite quickly and after breakfast was served we had to circle for about 10 minutes before landing at Heathrow. We left the plane we had 45 minutes to catch our next flight. Thankfully we made it and had a great 1 hour flight back up to Edinburgh and amazingly our luggage was nearly first to come through.

The buses on Boulder Highway are changing on 18 September so hopefully when we go back in April it won’t take as long to get to Boulder Station or Sam’s Town as they are introducing an express service.

Boring as this trip report is I hope that some people may have learnt that it is easy to get about on the local buses – that is if you have time to spare. We are lucky that we visit for at least 2 weeks at a time. If we were only in Vegas for a few days we would limit our travel to the Strip and Downtown.

We certainly made good use of the LVMR coupon book – we used half of it in April and half on this trip – and will definitely be buying it again next year. We have already booked up for 17 nights from 23 April 2012 at the Stratosphere again. We love staying there as it is handy for the buses especially the 108 from the airport and the beds are soooooooo comfortable.

We will definitely be using our 10c a spin tactic next year again. You get more time for your money, the same excitement, and sometimes even make a profit!

And for those of you who took the door handle quiz a few weeks ago here is another one for you to ponder over
